Robin Arzón on Building Mental Strength

Do you have the future… YOU, in mind? What plans are you making today to help create the life experiences you want tomorrow? Not talking about physical assets now – I am focused on Life Experiences.

I picked up some insights and takeaways from this write up by Robin Arzón – V.P of Fitness Programming @ Peloton.

Inner Critic: Robin is using exercise as an outlet– a stress reliever and a feel-good activity. I can totally relate to her comment about revering sweat. My workouts don’t really start until I’m sweating profusely – to me that’s my indication that I’m getting stronger &healthier. Interesting to note how she uses an outlet to confront and tackle her Inner Critic. I’m curious to learn more about how one turns an inner critic into an inner advocate. In my experience, we can use outlets to alter our mindsets, subdue our inner critic or Saboteur.

Start with one: Love this insight. How many times have we all started a new habit with vigor, enthusiasm, and the best of intentions? Think about your recent “new year” resolutions – and the determination with which you write them out and make plans – daily/weekly/monthly activities. There’s great wisdom in just starting – setting conservative goals and meeting them. I know a leader who has done 20 pushups daily for the last 18 years. It’s become a habit, after every shower, he drops for 20 pushups, anywhere he is, in the world. Over the years he’s gotten very fit, by now he can do 30 or 40 push-ups easily. What’s important though, is that he maintains he’s consistency. That habit and the discipline he’s demonstrating, carries over into other aspects of his life. Today he’s a very highly regarded, successful leader and he’s not even close to reaching his full potential Robin Arzón.

“So, I invite folks to start with one; then get curious about your own potential.” Robin Arzón

Bend so you don’t break I read this segment and what popped for me was the concept of living intentionally. My father always used to say to me – life is a marathon, not a sprint. He would say that everyone dances to the beat of their own drum – and I should never compare myself with anyone. Robin remarks that “A lot of decisions I make are not for my present state. I always have the future Robin in mind.”

I would encourage everyone to read and reflect on Robin’s article – here. What takeaways do you have? What's one thing you will commit to doing this month, to build your Mental Strength?
